BAREFOOT IN THE TEMPLE OF RATS

Deshnoke is a small town in the Rajasthan province of North India. A place no tourist would visit, if the temple I’m going to talk about wasn’t there.

The temple is called the Karni Mata Temple. Dedicated to one of the Indian gods Karni Mata, the temple seems quite ordinary from the outside. All it takes to surprise you, is one step inside…

Karni Mata Temple is filled with thousands, tens of thousands or maybe even more mice. Yes you heard it right. MICE!

The worst part is that you can only enter the temple barefoot. Because the Indian respect these mice. They feed them and even they eat from the same plate with them

Naturally you would think “Why are all these mice here, are these people crazy or something, what’s going on here?”.IMG_9818

Let me explain. Stepson of Karni Mata, the Indian god, drowns in a lake. Karni Mata begs Yama the death god to revive the boy. Yama mercies him and revives the boy. As a mouse!

FARE

So that’s the story… Now hold on to your hats. I entered this temple and barefoot of course!!! Fortunately I had some sense left in me so I hadn’t attempted eat from the same plate with the mice. Although I do not know what I would do if they encouraged me by saying “it’s a local food, very interesting spices are in it”.
